How to make my copy of Windows genuine

Having a valid copy of Windows is important as it lets you receive vital updates that keep your computer running smoothly and safely. To make your copy of Windows genuine, run the Windows update tool to perform a validity check. If Microsoft determines your copy of the Windows operating system to be invalid, it prompts you to activate it on your computer.

How to activate Windows

To activate Windows on your computer, select your version of Windows below and follow the steps.

Windows 11

1. Press Windows key+I to open Settings, or open the Start menu and click Settings in the list of pinned apps.
2. In the Settings window, click System in the left navigation menu.

3. On the right side, scroll down and click the Activation option.

4. A Windows is not activated message is displayed on the right if Windows needs to be activated. Follow the instructions and use the provided links to find the information needed to activate Windows.

Windows 10 and earlier

1. Press Windows key+I to open Settings, or open the Start menu and click the gear icon on the left side of the menu.

2. In the Settings window, click Update & Security.

3. In the left navigation menu, click Activation.

4. If Windows is not activated on your computer, an error notification is displayed in yellow on the right. Follow the instructions and use the provided links to find the information needed to activate Windows.
