Silk Road was an anonymous online black market that used Tor technology to prevent the monitoring of its users' network traffic. The site was most well known for its selling of illegal goods such as counterfeit goods and drugs.

Silk Road began operation in February 2011 and used bitcoin for transactions. It was shut down by the FBI on June 23, 2013, and its owner, Ross Ulbricht (aka The DPR (Dread Pirate Roberts)), was arrested. Shortly after, an attempt was made to re-launch the website as Silk Road 2.0 on November 6, 2013, but that website was shut down on November 6, 2014.
