SONET

Updated: 10/17/2017 by Computer Hope

Short for Synchronous Optical NETworking, SONET is an ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standard for connecting fiber-optic networks. The SONET standard is a physical network layer. It is used to carry a large amount of data over long distances in a broad range of high-level network protocols at the rate of 2.488 Gbps. Synchronous denotes the network's reliance on a clock to ensure all hosts run at the same rate to reduce network collisions and create a more effective network.

Note

Outside the United States, SONET is also called Synchronous Digital Hierarchy or SDH.
